Michelle Charles                  

 

 

Biography.

 

 

Michelle Charles was born in London and has exhibited and taught in the UK and the USA for the past three decades. She received an M.F.A. degree in studio art at Florida State University in and a B.A. Hons degree in painting from Brighton Polytechnic. Charles spent 20 years living, working, exhibiting and teaching art in the USA in Minneapolis, Philadelphia, and New York City including Parsons, Pratt, Long Island University, Moore College of Art and The Minneapolis College of Art and Design. During her tenure in the UK, she has taught at The University of Wales, Camberwell college of the Arts, St Martins and lectured at numerous other art schools and Universities including the Royal Academy and Wimbledon School of Art.

 

Charles returned to live and work in London in 2001. Since then, she has received awards in support of her work, including a third grant from the Pollock Krasner Foundation Fellowship and Arts Council England. Her work has been reviewed in publications that include; Art Forum, the Independent, Guardian, The Village Voice, New York magazine, and The Lancet. 

 

Her work has been exhibited internationally, including shows at Jane Lombard Gallery, Anthony Grant, NY; John Weber Gallery, NY; Neuberger Museum NY; Weatherspoon Museum of Art, NC; The Harris Art Gallery, and the Lodz museum in Poland. The most recent retrospective of her work was at Kettle’s Yard Cambridge.

 

Charles’s works are a part of public collections that include: The Brooklyn Museum, The National Museum of Art, DC, The Addison Gallery of American Art, The British Museum, The Wellcome Trust, Royal Pharmaceutical Society, Contemporary Arts Society, and the Jerome Foundation.
